Soldiers Tributes and Dedications The Passing Of A Generation! Soon They Will Be Gone! Let's Honor Our WWII Vets Always! ![]() ![]() Dear Pillows for Soldiers, I just wanted to drop you a quick note and send you a hearty Army 'Thank You' for the your incredibly thoughtful gifts! Kim Yocum, who runs our Family Readiness Group and is the wife of one of the squad leaders in my platoon, contacted Pillows for Soldiers towards the end of our deployment to Baghdad, Iraq. The pillows arrived just as the company returned, which could not have been better timed. We spent the last nine months of our fifteen month deployment in an extremely spartan Combat Out Post on the east side of Baghdad, just north of Sadr City. When we moved into the single building that made up C.O.P. Callahan, it was quite literally a burned out, bombed out shell. No electricity. No running water. No hot food. No showers. No beds. And it stayed that way for two months. The place was livable, barely, when we left Callahan nine months later, although we still had to deal with daily mortar and rocket attacks, as well as the occasional sniper and IED--all part of the high explosive delights of Baghdad. So, when our soldiers got off the bus, finallly here in Germany, safe and sound, you might imagine how delighted, albeit a bit bewildered, they all were. Everyone looked as if they were suddenly living in a wonderful dream world, not the hot and dusty torture that they had become accustomed to. It was truly a wonderful experience to hand each and every one of them a giant, super stuffed body pillow, and then to usher them into the comfortable and welcoming barracks, newly decorated and prepared for them. There were smiles all around, to say the least. There is nothing better than being able to lay your head down, and to know that you can sleep peacefully, and safely, with nothing threatening you. Your wonderful gifts have helped all of us to feel secure, and to finally be able to relax. We are home, finally, and I thought you would like to know the wonderful part you played in welcoming us home, in a very real and caring way. Thank you so very much!
